This group of photos has been sent to Paul Godfrey by Graham Smith who writes : "The photo was taken at the Flying Instrument School, R.A.F Melksham, Wilts. The year would be around 1954. I understand that the Camp is no longer there. We had some happy times. I remember going to Trowbridge and Chippenham on alternate weeks on Saturday for the day out. On the bus, I remember passing the Village of Lacock, the home of Fox-Talbot. I have always been interested in Photography, that is why I had my camera with me. I think from memory that the pay we had was about £2 a week. You could not go far on that these days. Still prices were a lot cheaper then . On Pay Parade we all had to parade and march up to the desk, salute the Officer and receive your pay. What a performance. I remember at my permanent R.A.F camp Leeming Bar in Yorkshire, we had on No 4 squadron a single Vampire, (twin boom 1954-1955 ) although I never saw it fly."
Thanks Graham for a pleasant reminder of those far-away days when the RAF was equipped with so many interesting aircraft like these night-fighter Meteors.
Here's a nice selection of photos (below) from our friend DAVID LESTER. These were taken at the Flying Legends show earlier this year. We appreciate our contributors sending in such excellent pictures. Perhaps this might encourage others to do the same! Thank you David.
